I used to be a rather huge wrestling fan. Like, really huge. Nowadays not so much. Don’t get me wrong, I do still watch every so often, and I enjoy it, but not nearly to the same extent. I imagine it’s something that practically everyone enjoys much more when they’re younger, and that was certainly the case for me. Saying that, there are still a few wrestlers who I really like, namely Cody Rhodes, Randy Orton and…Melina Perez, who I think is a kind of hero. Yes, that bendy Hispanic girl who screams a lot. Awesome.

Anyway, she recently wrote a blog on her WWE Universe account, which I’m going to post a link right now. It was pretty eye-opening, so if you care then take a read:

I’ve been a fan of Melina for a while, and I realise that there’s been a lot of negative internet gossip and whatnot surrounding her, which I’ve always brushed off as idiocy and, well, gossip. Mick Foley backs me, fyi - read his third book! It’s refreshing to hear her take on all of this. Not that I know her, but she strikes me as a genuinely sweet person – even back in her bitchy MNM days, haha. The fact that she’s had to put up with so much really says a lot, and I do hope that this will open a lot of eyes and shut a lot of mouths.

Why do I love Melina so much, out of all of those wrestlers? Well, firstly she’s really beautiful, obviously. Secondly, she came about at a time when I was kind of giving up on wrestling and captivated me. Weirdly, I’ve been captivated ever since. I barely ever watch wrestling shows on TV, but I always take the time to watch Melina’s matches and segments on YouTube (of course, it’s not possible at the minute given her injury). The woman just has so much charisma, fire and passion, which she combines with a sense of elegance and class that I consider pretty rare. There’s just something about her that always shines through, be it as an uber-bitch or everyone’s favourite screaming hellcat fan-favourite.

I’m going to close this with some of my favourite Melina matches and memories, which you’ll find below. I can’t find some of the matches/clips on YouTube, but these should suffice. I also wanna wish her a speedy and healthy recovery. Get well soon Melina! Hopefully this didn’t come off as too stalker-ish.

Admittedly, my vow to review Idol 9 regularly was completely hollow, and I apologize. For what it’s worth, it’s not because I’ve hated the season. People seem convinced that it’s the worst one yet, but truth be told I think it’s much, much better than last year’s disaster. Sure, ten of the top twelve are/were totally blah, but the fact (yes, fact) is that Siobhan Magnus and Crystal Bowersox make that all null and void. I can’t begin to descibe how great it feels (in case you have noticed, I get invested in these things!) to actually have not one favourite, but two. It’s not like last year, when I forced myself to support Allison/Kris/Adam due to there being nobody else to like. No, I actually care about these two, which makes this season great.

Now, you can probably gauge this from the title, but Siobhan in particular has emerged as my true AI9 favourite. From the Irish name to the glasses to the scream to the beautiful falsetto to the smile to the song choices to the general weirdness to the ACTUAL talent, everything about her is kinda perfect. Well, imperfect perfection, if that makes sense. She certainly isn’t pitch perfect with every performance, but who honestly cares? When you’re as talented as she is then it doesn’t matter that much. The point is that she sounds absolutely stunning when she sings slow songs (‘Across the Universe’ was my favourite performance of the season, followed by ‘House of the Rising Sun’), and in addition, she has just the enthusiasm and passion needed to pull off those Aretha/Stevie numbers. Is she soulful in the conventional sense? No. But she’s captivating, engaging and enchanting. She loves what she does, and she just goes for it. There’s no real pretense there – just a sense of love for both herself and her voice. She’s absolutely relative, which is a large reason for her success on the show so far.

Of course, I won’t deny that TTF was pretty terrible, but I actually think that might work to her advantage. A winner generally needs to mess up at one point or another, because otherwise they’ll become too consistent, and as a result ‘safe’. Safe in the sense that the viewers will consider them so, thus rendering them unsafe. Heh. I’m looking at you Crystal. Don’t get me wrong, I think Miss Bowersox is absolutely fantastic too, but I don’t want her to win. The Idol contract will do her no favours (Bo Bice anyone?), and as far as quality goes, I think her best bet would be to leave in Top 5/4/3, sign to an independant label and do her own thing. I mean, can you imagine how much worse Brooke White’s album would have been had she rushed it with a mainstream label. Instead she went in her own direction, and as a result ended up releasing the best Idol album EVER in ‘High Hopes & Heartbreak’.

So yes, Siobhan for the win. Vote ScreamQueen, people.

Paula’s gone, but Idol’s still standing. For another year at least, anyway. The internet’s been buzzing about Simon’s decision to depart after S9 in order to start up the US version of X Factor (ugh), so who knows what’s in the cards for AI? Anyway, that’s a story for another day.

Idol kicked off in Boston, followed by an Atlanta show. I won’t be reviewing the audition shows in their entirety; I’ll just be doing brief(-ish) run-throughs about notable contestants and moments. The ‘proper’ blogging will most likely start during Hollywood Round, so keep reading. Oh, and fwiw, I’ll actually finish the season. The faithful readers (ahem) out there will have noticed how I rather abruptly stopped reviewing XF6, but that because it was the worst Idol/XF season EVER. This shouldn’t be as bad, presumably.

On the topic of X Factor…congratulations Dannii and Kris! Dannii’s confirmed the fact that she’s pregnant with her first child, due in July! I’m sure she’ll make a great mummy.

Back to Idol…we’re getting guest celebrity judges to fill the void left by Paula up until Hollywood Round, when Ellen DeGeneres (yay!) joins the panel. These judges include Victoria ‘Posh Spice’ Beckham, Mary J. Blige, Katy Perry, Shaniah Twain, one of the Jonas Brothers, Kristen Chenoweth, Avril Lavigne, and probably some others who I’ve forgotten. Thus far, MJB has been…em, spirited, and, well, Posh didn’t do much at all. I wish I could at least say ‘looked pretty’, but that just wasn’t the case, because corpses aren’t pretty. Eat something.

Contestants!

Vanessa Wolfe is super-likable. She’s from a tiny little town in Tennessee – possibly the tiniest – and likes to jump bridges, because “there ain’t really much to do in Vonore“. I think America has already fallen in love with her. There’s nothing affected about her: not even her country twang, which is possibly a first for Idol. She’s genuine, and the judges loved her for it. Her version of ‘Wagon Wheel’ wasn’t bad (my brothers warn that song out on me with the Against Me! version), but she was visably shaking, and it came through in her voice. I’m hoping that once she gets the Hollywood and is able to play that guitar she’ll overcome her nerves and prove that there’s a good voice in there. She already has a pleasant, natural tone, and apparently an interesting taste in music (for Idol), so she should do well.

Maddy Curtis has several biological/adopted brothers with Down syndrome. A sob story? Yes. But touching? Yes.  And Maddy’s so likable that I don’t mind. ‘Hallelujah’ has been done to death, but hers was a nice version. Her voice is surprisingly mature given her age, and gives off a Dusty Springfield kinda vibe.

Tyler Grady looked like Justin Guarini in the face, but was actually hot. I was worried that he might be a mom-rocker, but he sang some Motown, so yay. He could (and will) do very well on this show. If people find David Cook hot (huh?) then they’re gonna find Tyler orgasmic.

Portuguese Katie Stevens sang ‘At Last’ by Etta James, and was very good. That song is super-boring without at least a very talented vocalist singing it, and she pulled it off. And she was only sixteen, which was bizarre. Remember Kelly singing that during her audition? I miss her. They’d better have her perform this year. >_>

Leah Laurenti grew up with really strict parents, but I don’t remember much about her backstory aside from that. Vocally she was very good. Kinda like a quirkier Katherine McPhee based on that audition. Good, jazzy Kat, not screechy, belting Kat.

Kia Johnson was lovely. She reminded me of Vonzell Solomon as far as personality goes (that’s a GOOD thing). ‘My Heart Will Go’ has been worn out, but she added some R&B runs and licks to it and it sounded great. Like Randy said, she has nice phrasing.

Jermaine Sellers could be the first black male R&B singer to do well on this show in ages. He made an interesting song choice in ‘One of Us’, and seemed like a sweet guy. Hopefully he doesn’t overdo it with the runs, but he was very good. Best yet according to Randy.

As a whole, I’m liking this a lot more than I liked last year. There have been no ‘wow!’ moments yet, but there are a lot who could really grow on me and become proper favourites. Not like last year, when I was indifferent for most of the season.

If I’m being honest, I think people are expecting too much from Kradison. Allison was my favourite, but I don’t think she’ll do that well at all. They aren’t promoting her, and her single really isn’t great. Meanwhile, Kris is still looked at as the ‘wrong’ winner and the guy who stole Adam’s spot, whereas Adam is being overhyped and has a huge burden on him; anything less than amazing is going to be seen as a failure.

Look at Fantasia: she was pushed as the BEST CONTESTANT EVEERRRR, and she was super-talented as both a singer and a performer, but the mainstream world didn’t take to her recorded stuff. She’s still doing terrifically, but people view her as a failed winner because she didn’t live up to the impossibly high expectations people had set for her.

And also, people were going on about how the Davids would be the most successful final two ever by a mile, yet they’ve hardly set the world alight.

So yeah, I think we should hold our breath when it comes to Kradison. They’ll do quite well – that’s guaranteed. But will the do amazingly? That remains to be seen. :/

Movie night this week, and most contestants handed in an at-the-very-least-acceptable performance. Again, there was one obvious stand-out, a lot of ‘good’, and some not so good. Dannii’s back in her old position (beside Louis, not Simon), Cheryl’s a cow, Simon’s patronising and Louis is funny. He also namedrops Kelly Clarkson and Taylor Swift, so go Louis.

The performances…

Stacey opened the show with a decent version of Dusty Springfield’s ‘Son of a Preacher Man’. She sang it quite well, performed it quite well and looked hot, and it’s a great song, but there’s a problem. This song has never been one that’s translated well on these kind of shows, IMO. It lacks the punch required to make a real impact, and it’s a hard song to – I’m stealing an X Factor cliche here – make your own. Add that to the fact that she opened the show, and Stacey could be in trouble this week.

Olly sang ‘Twist and Shout’, and it’s typical Olly. Goofy dancing, screwed up face, okay-ish vocals, a big production…you get the point. Louis criticises the song-choice, and Dannii doesn’t think he (Olly) was fussed on the song himself. I agree…there was a bigger disconnection than ever this week. You can barely hear the other two over the audience. Well, at least some people get him.

Lloyd was out to redeem himself, and he was certainly better than last week, but that’s not saying much. He sang ‘Stand By Me’, and his voice sounded pretty enough. He fell flat quite a lot though, and he completely lost the melody at one point. Oh, and there was this one really cringy moment where he went down to Chezza, held onto her hand and pleading with her to stand by him. Gosh, he’s totally infatuated, and she’s loving every moment of it. Ethan should do something.

Jamie sang ‘Crying’ pretty badly. He was flat to begin with, and kept switching between keys. Still, he’s a ‘rocker’, so he’s allowed to go off-key, obviously. He just wasn’t very good. Story of Jamie’s X Factor run thus far. I hope he finally goes this week.

Lucie sang ‘This Is Me’ from Camp Rock. It’s an awful, bland nu-Disney song, but still, she managed to make it sound good, which says a lot about this girl’s talent. It wasn’t as good as the last two weeks, but that’s understandable. I sort of wish she’d sung a proper Disney song, like ‘Colors of the Wind’ or ‘I Won’t Say I’m In Love’ or something like that. Perhaps it wouldn’t have been as contemporary, but she would’ve sounded great. Oh well.

Danyl won the night with his version of ‘Purple Rain’. No questions asked, really. The song absolutely complimented his tone, and he didn’t overdo it or try too hard. It just worked. Was it as good as Ruth’s? Maybe not, but the situation’s different, and it was a different take on the song. Cheryl compliments him for toning down the cockiness, but he was never cocky to begin with, so she really needs to drop it. And Cheryl’s the last person to criticise anyone’s personality, to be honest. Punched out any toilet attendants recently, Chezza? One other thing: Danyl cut his hair! He still looks sexy as hell, but I liked the old hair. :/ Oh well. Great performance.

John&Edward sing Ghostbusters. Ha. Dannii’s not even humouring them anymore. Go Dannii. I’ve been over these two since the Britney song. Whatever.

Joe closes the show with ‘Circle of Life’, and sounds great (as usual), but is brought down by the weird production, and he chose to modulate the pitch and arrangement in some weird places. Good though. And reliable. Joe’s very reliable. And I don’t his musical theatre-ish-ness much, because he’d do great in that area, and X Factor doesn’t necessarily have to lead to a major recording career.

It was ‘Rock’ night this week, and naturally, the two soft-voiced girls were destined to fail miserably. I mean, Lucie’s practically musical theatre, and Stacey’s Eva Cassidy-lite. Was this the case? Not at all. In fact, these two, alongside Rachel and Joe, totally put the other five to shame last night. Dannii’s gotten to know the girls, and as a result, her song choices were fantastic. And Joe’s just so consistent…I really don’t think he’s ever going to have a bad night, unless they do an urban/hip hop theme or something.

Dannii and Louis swapped seats last night, which was weird at first, but actually worked. You just know the media are going to have a field day as a result though. Speaking of Dannii: did anyone see her on Life Stories? She came across so well. She seems like such a lovely, genuine person.

The performances:

Joe opened the show with karaoke standard (and the most downloaded song of all time), ‘Don’t Stop Believin”, by Journey. It’s not exactly the edgiest song in the world, so Joe didn’t look out of his depth, and it’s a BIG song with a lot of BIG notes, so it allowed Joe to demonstrate yet again that he’s probably the best vocalist in the competition. He’s still totally musical theatre, but who cares, it still worked. Wasn’t sure about the outfit, but that’s not important in Joe’s case. Oh, and he’s finally started to learn to control his vibrato, which sounded nice this week.

Lucie was next, which was weird. They stuck the two ‘reliable’ contestants on first, meaning that they would’ve had nobody to fall back on had the others fallen apart (a la Diva week). Lucie was brilliant. She sang ‘Sweet Child o’ Mine’, but didn’t stick to the Sheryl Crow version. The singing was by in large great (she’s up there with Joe), and she seemed pretty comfortable. Last week she was classy and sultry, and this week she was youthful and exciting. Unlike certain other performers tonight, she managed to make a classic rock song sound contemporary, and everything just worked. Cheryl and Simon think she could be a British Avril Lavigne, and while I’m not convinced, they have a strong argument after this. If I was going to manage Lucie, I’d have her go down a sort of alternative pop route. Think the Dawson’s Creek soundtrack with a bit more edge. Paula Cole/Jewel/etc with a modern spin. I think I’ve finally found a proper favourite in Lucie, and I can’t wait to see what she does next week.

Danyl sang ‘I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing’, which says a lot about the effort Simon puts into his song choices, tbh. He couldn’t hear the backing track at first, and started in the wrong key, sadly. Still, he managed to pick himself up by the start of the first chorus, and while it wasn’t pitch perfect, he still sounded good for the remainder of the song. The belts at the end were strong. Dannii thinks he’s lost his mojo after last week, and Louis wants him to get his confidence back. Cheryl? Well, she just doesn’t like him. I doubt he’s too bothered, Chezza. He looked a bit crestfallen, but I think this was more on account of his mishap in the first verse than his bottom two experience last week. I doubt he’ll fall into that position this week again regardless: he’ll have the backlash vote, the worried fan vote, and sympathy vote (the played on the fact that the media have been horrible to him in his VT). Hope he recovers next week, because I still love him.

Lloyd essentially killed ‘I Kissed a Girl’, and not in a good way. I do really like Lloyd’s voice, but only when he sings mellow, soft songs. This didn’t fit his voice, and was a hideous song choice on Cheryl’s part. This song was successful because it was controversial and edgy in a poppish kind of way. Lloyd should’ve sang about kissing a boy, or he should’ve said ‘boyfriend’ instead of ‘girlfriend’. Instead, they defied the point of the song, and in turn made him look like he enjoys cheating on his girlfriends. Hardly the smartest song choice in the world, Cheryl. ‘Course, he’ll be safe.

Stacey sang Keane’s ‘Somewhere Only We Know’, which IS a rock song, people. It’s piano/alternative rock. It was her best performance yet, which is a relief after the last two weeks. She sounded lovely, and the song complimented her voice. She walked this week…d’you reckon she’ll dance next? God knows how that’ll go. Simon called it one of her best performances yet, but not after being dull and irrelevant for a few minutes.

Jamie sang ‘Rocks’ by Primal Scream, and, as usual, came over as karaoke and unoriginal. Simon’s song choices for Jamie have been horrible, to be honest. He’s shown no relevance throughout the competition, and he’s done nothing to prove that he could potentially be a decent, contemporary rock singer. He’s here purely because he has an afro, and I think he’ll be out soon.

Rachel sang ‘One’ by U2, and did excellently with it. It was touching, soulful and powerful, and was a performance that she needed. There was a big note that seemed iffy at first, but sounds great on second listen. Louis, Cheryl and Dannii all loved it, but Simon claims to have only liked the last ‘third’. Of course, Simon was responsible for Adam Lambert’s mauling of this song earlier this year, so his opinion isn’t worth much. He compared Rachel’s hair to Dannii’s, which led to Dannii making a joke about Simon’s hair. That was pretty funny. I hope she’s not in the bottom two this week, but there’s a good chance she will be, despite how strong her performance was.

John&Edward ‘sang’ the 5ive version of ‘We Will Rock You’. It was quite entertaining, and they looked funny, but their acts started to wear thin tbh. For me, anyways…they’ll still be here until top five/four or so. Not much else to say.

Olly closed the show with ‘Come Together’. Carly Smithson tore this song up (in a good way) on Idol last year, fyi. Olly’s vocals were good, but the JT impression doesn’t do it for me. Oh, and don’t flash your chest again, Olly. He was good though, definitely one of the better ones last night.

Week 3 sees the (timely, in my opinion) departure of unconventional rapping girlband Miss FRANK, but will most likely be remembered as the night when Danyl Johnson was in the bottom two.

Honestly though, does anyone believe that these were the real results for a second? Not to be cynical or anything, but this ‘shock’ could be the best thing to happen to Danyl Johnson during his X Factor stint. Simon realises that there’s been a massive backlash against Danyl, a backlash that stems from one thing: Danyl’s overexposure and hype. Do you think there’d be *nearly* as much Danyl-haters if he hadn’t been anointed The Chosen One during his first audition? No. He was suffering from front-runner-itis, and his case was even worse that usual. So naturally, Simon needed to win the public over again. Danyl was able to sing the song that made him popular in the first place, and better yet, Dannii and Cheryl brought it to deadlock (Cheryl’s acting is awful, by the way), creating the sense that the judges weren’t biased towards Danyl.

Cynical? Yes. True? Probably.

So, Miss FRANK are gone. Fair enough.

Next week’s theme = rock, with Bon Jovi as mentors. Uh-oh. Lucie could sing some Alanis Morissette, I guess. Rachel could do some girl-arena-pop/rock, like Pat Benatar or Pink. I really don’t know. :/

Big Band night usually produces memorable performances on both Idol and X Factor. Kelly Clarkson’s ‘Stuff Like That There’? Tamyra’s ‘Minnie the Moocher’? Fantasia’s ‘What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life’? LaToya’s ‘Don’t Rain On My Parade’? Leona’s ‘Summertime’? Rhydian’s ‘Get this Party Started’? Alexandra’s ‘Candyman’? I could keep going here, but I won’t.

Last night produced several good performances. Sure, none of them will go down with the likes of ‘Stuff Like That There’, but one in particular was very, very good.

Onto the performances:

Olly opened the show ‘Bewitched’. Can’t say I’ve heard it before, and I don’t think I’ll be listening to it again. To me it sounded as though Olly was putting on his best generic ‘swing’ voice, complete with stupid American-ized laughs and mannerisms. I hate when guys do that on these shows, it reminds me of Ray Quinn. :X He sang it well enough, but it was totally interchangeable and forgettable. Bottom two? Maybe.

Lloyd sang ‘Fly Me to the Moon’, following in the footsteps of likes of Ray Quinn, Leon Jackson and about a billion other XF auditionees. One difference though: Lloyd did a backflip. That was pretty cool, if totally pointless. Sadly, Britain’s favourite Aryan child was totally flat this week. It certainly wasn’t as good as ‘Bleeding Love’; it wasn’t even as good as ‘Cry Me a River’. One more thing: Lloyd seems to be in love with Cheryl, judging by the looks he was giving her last week. It’s cute, but Ethan won’t be pleased.

Miss FRANK did a reprisal of their Boot Camp performance, singing ‘That’s Life’. They started off alright-ish, and the rap was cute, but they fell apart after that. That last note was painful. I just don’t think the blonde one is as good as the others (granted, they’re not great either), and it brings down the quality of their performances. Methinks the judges think this too, but they’re frightened of hurting her feelings. Is the blonde one Shar or Shanice, by the way?

Rachel did her best with Tina’s signature song, ‘Proud Mary’. Not strictly big band, but whatever. It was one of the best performances of the night. Not spectacular, but good, and it’s a brilliant song. I pray to god she isn’t in the bottom two again; she’ll break down. She has a good chance of staying out of that bottom spot after that performance, but oh dear, her post-performance reaction really won’t do her any favours. Rachel, you have a lovely personality, and people will see that eventually…just go with it. Don’t try to seem quirky or peppy or w/e, because it comes off as desperate.

Jamie wins the prize for least Big Band-ish song choice of the night. He sang ‘Angel of Harlem’ by U2, and it wasn’t very good. To be fair, S Club 7 have been performed on Big Band night in the past, so it’s not such a big deal. The real problem is that it just wasn’t a great or memorable performance. And his ‘rock’ voice sounded really affected tonight. Hope he’s in the bottom two. >_>

Stacey went Disney, singing ‘When You Wish Upon a Star’. It’s a lovely song, and she looked princess-like in that dress, but again, the vocals were off. She’ll make it through again based on her personality alone, but there’s only so far personality can take you in a competition like this. God knows what Stacey’s gonna do for rock week…

Danyl took on the Muse version of ‘Feeling Good’. Apparently, Danyl ripped off Adam Lambert, but Adam ripped off Muse, so what’s the problem? It was a good performance, something that he needed coming off the back of that Whitney nightmare last week. He’s a nice, talented guy (screw the media) with a sexy voice, so Danyl’s in it for the long haul.

Joe sang/performed a very awkward rendition of ‘Sway’. As usual, the vocals were strong, but Joe’s hardly sultry. It didn’t work, although he’ll be safe. British Archie, remember?

Lucie stole the show with an (almost) pitch-perfect version of ‘My Funny Valentine’. Her voice cracked slightly on the power note, but aside from that the performance was pretty brilliant. She has such a pretty voice when she uses it right. Hopefully Dannii gets the message and stops giving her power ballads. And WTF was up with Simon’s comment? It’s big band night, so what do you expect? Leona’s ‘Summertime’ was hardly a contemporary, relevant performance, was it? Lucie was brilliant, and he knows it.

John&Edward closed the show with ‘She Bangs’. Funny, bad vocally, reasonably entertaining. Same as ever, really. Lucie should have been on last, but oh well.
